چکیده

Deep SCUBA observations of NGC 1275 at 450μm and 850μm along with the application of deconvolution algorithms have permitted us to separate the strong core emission in this galaxy from the fainter extended emission around it. The core has a steep spectral index and is likely due primarily to the AGN. The faint emission has a positive spectral index and is clearly due to extended dust in a patchy distribution out to a radius of ∼ 20 kpc from the nucleus. These observations have now revealed that a large quantity of dust, ∼ 6 × 10 M⊙, 2 orders of magnitude larger than that inferred from previous optical absorption measurements, exists in this galaxy. We estimate the temperature of this dust to be ∼ 20 K (using an emissivity index of β = 1.3) and the gas/dust ratio to be 360. These values are typical of spiral galaxies. The dust emission correlates spatially with the hot X−ray emitting gas which may be due to collisional heating of broadly distributed dust by electrons. Since the destruction timescale is short, the dust cannot be replenished by stellar mass loss and must be externally supplied, either via the infalling galaxy or the cooling flow itself.

SCUBA Observations of the Elliptical Galaxy NGC 4374

We present SCUBA imaging and photometry of the elliptical galaxy NGC 4374. The imaging observations are used to examine the spatial distribution of thermal emission from dust and the radio to infrared continuum spectrum. In the SCUBA 850μm image, the galaxy is found to be a point source, constraining the emission to less than 15 (1.5 kpc for a distance of 20.74 Mpc). The simplest interpretation...

Discovery of atomic and molecular mid infra - red emission lines in off - nuclear regions of NGC 1275 and NGC 4696 with the Spitzer Space Telescope

We present Spitzer high-resolution spectra of off-nuclear regions in the central cluster galaxies NGC 1275 and NGC 4696 in the Perseus and Centaurus clusters, respectively. Both objects are surrounded by extensive optical emission-line filamentary nebulae, bright outer parts of which are the targets of our observations. The 10–37µm spectra show strong pure rotational lines from molecular hydrog...

Asymmetric , arc minute scale structures around NGC 1275

ROSAT HRI observations show complicated substructure in the X–ray surface brightness within ∼5 arcminutes around NGC 1275 – the dominant galaxy of the Perseus cluster. The typical amplitude of the variations is of the order of 30% of the azimuthally averaged surface brightness at a given distance from NGC 1275. We argue that this substructure could be related to the activity of NGC 1275 in the ...

High Spatial Resolution Mid-infrared Observations of Three Seyfert Galaxies

Images at 12.5 lm of nuclei of three nearby Seyfert galaxies—NGC 1275, NGC 4151, and NGC 7469— have been obtained with the 10 m Keck Telescope. NGC 7469 is resolved and deconvolution delineates a structure (<0>04) 0>08, or less than 13 26 pc at a position angle of 135 . From a comparison with structure seen at millimeter wavelengths, this structure is interpreted as a disk aligned with the mole...

SCUBA observations of NGC 6946 ⋆

We present sub-millimetre images of the spiral galaxy NGC 6946 at 450 and 850 µm. The observations have been carried out using the scan/map imaging mode of the Sub-millimetre Common User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) at the James Clark Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The comparison with a 12 CO(2-1) line emission map from IRAM and with an U-band image, clearly shows that the 850 µm emission is associated w...
